Video downloading industry budding

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Universal Pictures has come up with a new service that enhances the possibilities of its customers of watching box-offices successes and favorite TV series on the go. The so-called downloads-to-own are available in three formats at the moment: they can be downloaded onto PC, portable media player and mobile phone.

Entertainment – take games and music – have been advancing towards digitizing versions. And the move of one of the central movie-making studios proves the fact. You do not have to go to the cinema – now cinema goes to you.

The services is expected to enter the U.K. market on April 10 with 3 movies “King Kong,” “Nanny McPhee” and “Pride and Prejudice” ready for public download. The price is not the strongest point here. For 19.99 pounds you can get a DVD, that will be posted to your place of residence, and two legitimate downloadable copies of a movie on the day of its release. One of the copies is for your portable media player, the other is for a mobile phone.

It should be noted that DVDs are not compatible with Apple iPODs and Macs, you can only view them on a PC with Windows applications installed.

http://tech.monstersandcritics.com that according to the recent poll conducted among 488 Starz Entertainment Group LLC subscribers, “70 percent of users admitted to no longer going to the video store and 72 percent said they rented fewer DVDs, while 60 percent bought fewer DVDs.”

Nevertheless, Universal Pictures are enthusiastic about the future and soon-growing popularity of the innovation. They believe that the step will promote legitimate content and will curb piracy. However, experts have voiced apprehensions that DVD-burners can conjure up some tricks that will break the safety barrier.

As you see, the movie-producing giant is now in competition with high-definition TVs and DVD players. Though the latter still enjoy greater credibility, the cinema bosses believe the future is in the download-to-own hands.

Web and video conferencing services forging ahead

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

Web and video conferencing services have been gained more and more popularity with Internet users recently. Among those who are using teleconferencing routinely are small companies and private giants, educational establishments and families to talk to the members that are geographically dispersed. The major benefit that these services offer is a considerable reduction in travel-related costs, which makes the prices for video and web services negligible. Besides, today one will not need to install any expensive equipment or download complicated software.

Apart from being a much cheaper option, meeting online is itching closer to a real meeting in its possibilities. You can see and hear your partners with video and audio streams, you can share various documents, the presenter can arrange a PowerPoint presentation to be observed by all the participants, etc.

MegaMeeting.com, a company that is located in Los Angeles and that provides browser based video and web conferencing services and software through its website, has recently perfected its services cutting the edge even sharper. Now they are 100% desktop and do not require any installations on your PC.

It enriched the services with several new features, including free integrated teleconferencing, live polling, online surveys, improved VoIP and some more new features aimed at enhancing interactivity. Now the services support about 99% of all browsers and can serve about 100 participants. The participants can partake in a conference even if their PCs are protected with a firewall.

The screen can show up to 13 participants, and everybody who is not on the screen can see those 13. The presenter can control the number of the images. Partners from around the world can log onto a conference, while such an innovation as a real-time notepad allows having a real-time brainstorm session. All of this is designed to improve the quality of virtual interaction and decision-making.

Tele conferencing and good it does for rural students

Thursday, March 9th, 2006

Rural areas are fun to live in: they are full of greenery, fresh air, quiet surroundings, good for “taking my dad for a pint or two on Sunday morning stroll” and for no traffic, noise and less radiation absorbed. Families move to the country to raise healthy children, feel close to nature and to the true selves. Then children go to school: classes are smaller than in the city, teachers know students better - they live across the street from each and other – a close community that can understand the particular needs and personalities to a greater extent.

More bridgesFine, fine. Now about the disadvantages. First of all comes the scarcity of teachers of certain subjects. And as a result the absence of these certain subjects in the curriculum, which creates urge with some and calls for efforts to be taken to fill in the knowledge gap and satisfy ambitions. The solution has been found.

Now students of some far-reaching regions can take up calculus and statistics, philosophy, history of journalism and Portuguese and more. They can hear and watch teachers talking to them from different locations. They can also see students from schools in different. They can communicate with the presenter, but only by phone or internet fax, the presenter cannot see the students in other classrooms. It is one-way video and two-way audio as against the video conferecing that is thought of as realtime communication 2V-2A.

As for the cost of technologies – it ranges from $100 to $1,500 a month depending on the number of features, type of equipment and tele call conference provider. The number of students wishing to take up a rare course should be at least 10 to scrap up a budget. Of course, schools receive state subsidies to implement distance-learning course options.

Students think this kind of education is fun: it feels like a big classroom with other participants coming off the screen, one can see the reaction of fellow-students, which gives them a sense of community and possibility to make friends and believe that the earth is round.
