Let’s talk about VoIP today. Voice-over-Internet-Protocol, Internet Telephony, IP Telephony and Digital Phone are among the names that VoIP is often called. In short, it is a phone call married to Internet, which results in the possibility of making phone calls using broadband Internet connection instead of the fixed phone line. It certainly has a number of advantages, otherwise they wouldn’t invent it.
VoIP is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or any other IP-based network, courtesy of Wikipedia. First of all, it should be specified that phone calls can be based on the World Wide Web or the traffic can be deployed on any IP-network, including local area network, which connection to the rest of the Internet is restricted.
So, there are different sorts of phone calls that can be made with IP Telephony. You can make local, international, long-distance and mobile calls. They fees charged for them can be the same or different, depending on the VoIP provider and the number you dial, or the provider that the person or organization that you try to reach use.
There are two ways of arranging VoIP from home. You may use the adaptor that connects you to the Internet: you pick up the receiver and dial the number. The call is goes through your local telephone company to a VoIP provider. The second one: you get a mic headset and use your keyboard to call conference. The signal that the mic receives is converted into digital form, transferred via Internet and regains its voice shape when reaching the other end.
Recently, the federal agencies have been mulling over embracing VoIP technologies. At a conference held this week panelists argued that the introduction of the service and its wide use are expected to save up to $10 million on regular phone calls, but the bugbear here is security issues. Let’s wait and see how these are going to be tackled.
